In March 2026, our partner University of Catania (UNICT) opened the doors of its research laboratories to a group of high school students, offering them a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the world of scientific research in sustainable agriculture — and introducing them to the work being carried out under the NextGenBioPest project.
The visit was part of UNICT's ongoing commitment to science outreach and education, bringing prospective students into direct contact with the researchers, technologies, and ideas that are shaping the future of crop protection in Europe.
A Day Inside the Lab
For many of the students, the visit represented their first real encounter with a working research laboratory — and with the kind of science that turns global challenges into practical, innovative solutions.
During the visit, UNICT researchers presented the goals and activities of NextGenBioPest, explaining in accessible and engaging terms how the project is developing next-generation biopesticides to replace harmful synthetic chemicals in the protection of fruit and vegetable crops. From biological control agents to cutting-edge molecular diagnostics, the students were introduced to a wide and inspiring range of research approaches.
The hands-on, in-person format allowed for genuine curiosity and spontaneous conversation — the kind of exchange that no textbook or classroom session can fully replicate.
Planting the Seeds of a Research Career
Beyond raising awareness of NextGenBioPest, the visit served a broader and equally important purpose: showing young people that a career in agricultural research is not only possible, but exciting, meaningful, and urgently needed.
At a time when sustainable food production and environmental protection are among the defining challenges of our era, inspiring the next generation of scientists to enter this field is one of the most impactful investments a research institution can make. By welcoming high school students into their laboratories, UNICT researchers sent a powerful message: this work matters, and there is a place for you in it.
Science Outreach as a Core Mission
Engaging with young audiences and prospective students is an integral part of NextGenBioPest's broader communication and outreach strategy. Research that remains confined to scientific publications and expert conferences can only go so far — real, lasting impact begins when curiosity is sparked early, and when young people can see themselves as future contributors to the solutions the world needs.
We commend the University of Catania for this wonderful initiative and thank the researchers and staff who took the time to share their passion and expertise with the students who visited.
